According to one, Nainital derives its name from the Goddess Naina, while another legend says that when the Goddess Sati lost her eyes while being carried by Lord Shiva, a lake was formed. This gorgeous small municipality is bounded by seven hills, commonly known as 'Sapta-Shring' - Ayarpata, Deopata, Handi-Bandi, Naina, Alma, Lariya-Kanta, and Sher-Ka-Danda.

Nainital, a stunning municipality with a mystical charm, attracts tourists almost all year round. However, the best time to visit Nainital is from March to June, which is the summer/spring season in the country. March to September marks the summertime of Nainital. It is also the peak sightseeing period and the most outstanding time to visit the city as the climate remains pleasant and favourable throughout the day.   • By Air - There is no direct connectivity to Nainital by air. The nearest airport is in Pantnagar, which is 65 km away from the district.
  • By Rail - The nearest railway station to Nainital is Kathgodam, which is approximately 35 km away from the municipality of Nainital. Regular bus services connect Kathgodam and Nainital well.
  • By Road - The only way Nainital is dynamically linked to the rest of the world is through the roadways. Usual bus services, whether based in Uttarakhand or interstate, connect Nainital to the rest of India. Shared radio cabs and taxis are also available, depending on your budget.
