Description

Chakrata is a small hill station at 2,100 meters above sea level, located in the Dehradun district of Uttarakhand. Previously known for its Jaunsari culture, it was called Jaunsar Bawar. Chakrata was developed during British rule as a hill station, along with many other hill stations in the Indian Himalayas. You will get excellent views of the Yamuna valley below Chakrata. Kharambha Peak is the highest point in Chakrata, providing great panoramic views. The surrounding forests and hills offer good opportunities for trekking and hiking.

Best Time to Visit Chakrata

Chakrata, as a hill station, is best visited in summer (April, May, June) as well as in September and October during the Diwali and Dussehra vacations. If you like to visit for snow, the winter season is also good from December onwards.

How to Reach Chakrata

  • By Air - Dehradun Jolly Grant is the nearest airport, 140 km away. Dehradun Airport has multiple flights from Delhi as well as regular flights from Mumbai, Lucknow, and Ahmedabad.
  • By Rail - Dehradun is the nearest railway station, approximately a 4-hour drive (100 km). Dehradun is well connected by trains from many major cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Amritsar, and Varanasi.
  • By Road - Chakrata is easily accessible from Dehradun as well as from Mussoorie. From Dehradun, it is 120 km via Mussoorie, which is a popular route among tourists. It can also be reached via Dakpatthar with approximately a 4-hour drive. Public buses and taxis are available from Mussoorie and Dehradun.
